Happy Hour rolled around at 4pm so over to the playhouse for drinks.
Tuesday, washing day then into town, booked the truck in for a service, got our masks and a black and white shirt for Paul for the Easter rally, and lunch in town, where we sat outside in the stunning weather, (yum Sushi for me, not for Paul, he had a pie!)
Wednesday, Paul spent the afternoon with his Dad while the truck was serviced and I enjoyed a few hours at the hair academy having my hair coloured and foiled by a student, Amber. A great way to spent a little money and get a lot of colour.
Thursday we went through to Whangamata to attend the BEACH HOP. The town swells from 4,000 to 70,000 for the weekend but the event runs for 5 days. We stayed at Wendy and Vic’s place along with Cedric and Karen and Chris. Their front yard looked like a campsite with us all there in our motor homes. We enjoyed each night together having combined BBQ dinners.
The Beach Hop was amazing; the town is a total party with 50’s and 60’s music playing everywhere with around 20 bands in town for 5 days. The cars were incredible, at least 2,000 cars from that era, they were fantastic. Paul and Cedric were glued to the streets most nights just watching the continual stream of cars up and down the main street. Friday night at one bar, Karen, Wendy, Vic and I witnessed a marriage proposal which was just lovely. We girls shed a tear or two watching the event unfold. Wendy and I went to church with Cedric and Karen on Sunday morning at the local Baptist Church. Entertaining indeed as themed around the Beach Hop so the church service was full of dancing and singing and the song Rock around the Clock was reworked to fit the church service.

<div style="height: 20px; overflow: Tauranga

Left Whangamata mid afternoon and stayed at the RSA in Kati Kati.
Tuesday we were about to head to town when Ray and Heather arrived in the car park at the RSA. We chatted for a bit then they headed back to Tauranga and we headed into town. The murals around Kati Kati town are amazing and very colourful and there is no graffiti, which is brilliant.
We decided to check out all the free places we could potentially stay in Kati Kati from our NZMCA travel directory. Many were too small for us but a couple were great, so well worth driving around the place and we saw the area which was good. Lunch in town then a walk around the shops, then to the Kati Kati Heritage Museum owned and operated by Nancy and Ken Merriman. They started the museum in 2001 from scratch which took them a year to set up. Nancy is 75 and Ken is 82 and now blind so it has become time to retire and the Kati Kati town feels the museum offers so much they have put it in a community trust so the museum can continue to operate. We were the only people in the front store and Nancy was very keen that we took the guided tour so she could train the new volunteers for the Trust. So off we went; back in time, to when the overseas migrants came to Kati Kati, which means nibble nibble. We learnt that the Maori facial Moko is a register of family history and heritage as originally they had no written language. We saw old washing machines, printing machines, typewriters, photos and post cards as well as 3d like binoculars that were very cool. We listened to 78 records on an old gramophone and Nancy played a very old organ that you pump the floor panel to produce the sound. After our very enlightened tour we visited 5th Wheel members at the Naturist camp ground they live in, then groceries and back to the RSA for a drink before dinner.

Wednesday, I received many calls, texts and emails for my birthday. Thanks all. We went out mid morning to explore the Kati Kati Haiku Pathway behind the township which is a walk way with boulders with haiku (short, simple poems generally three lines long). After lunch we walked the track to the Tuahu Kauri that leads to the massive kauri tree at the end of Hot Springs Road which was an enjoyable 20 minutes each way through beautiful bush. Back home to bubbles and Barry and Judy arrived for dinner at the RSA and popped in for a chat. We ended up dining with them later and coffee back here afterwards.

Thursday we left for the long! 34 km journey (Muffin loves these short trips) to Tauranga to the Tect Arena for the NZMCA Easter Rally. Registered and picked up our goodie bag, with sun hats, handcream, vouchers and Easter buns and eggs. Muffin received a goodie bag too, with toys, kitty litter, food and a Cat and Dog magazine for her Mum. Pete and Sue arrived with Paul’s list of items that he wanted from Wellington and my birthday cards from Mum and Nan. AND Easter Eggs, we are away from Welly and we still get yummy Easter Eggs from Mum. Thanks.
It was a great weekend which we enjoyed the company of many of our motor home friends.
With 800 vehicles at the rally we were sure to know a few people! We enjoyed the nightly class="paragraph editable-text" style=" text-align: left; "> Monday 27 Feb - Sunday 4 Mar
Te Aroha/ Matamata / Hamilton

Paul spent nearly two days cleaning the truck and 5th Wheel by hand while I enjoyed baking banana cake, a chocolate slice, a chocolate pudding, making yoghurt and an Ambrosia desert, while doing the office work in between. Baking creates plenty of dishes and as it is hand washing only, seem to do them all day! Wakerley’s RV Centre called and we are booked in to install the level up kit next Tuesday so we have another week to discover some new places before heading back to Tauranga. Bacon, eggs, mushrooms and hash browns for lunch outside then we treated ourselves to a mineral spa tub for 2 at the Te Aroha Bath house. Veni was right, your skin feels like silk. The 30 minutes was just enough and did not go too quickly. Tuesday I drove into town to post some letters and have a look see at the shops. I like these quiet small towns for plenty of parking space and not much traffic. Good for truck driving practice! Te Aroha has its own radio that is played under the shop veranda’s. The “station” is run by local Wayne Pitt from Pittsy’s Mountain Radio. He plays local ads and old music throughout the township. Great idea.
Checked out the i-site for more info on Te Aroha and think we will be back, there is much more to do in this little town, may even walk the 45 minutes to the lookout and if really keen, take the 2.5 hour climb to the top of the mountain – that’s one way! Maybe not! We’ll see.
Muffin was more than happy when we returned back one afternoon to find her completely comatosed on our day pack on the floor, check out the photo! Is she at home or what!

Matamata - Arrived and dumped. While Paul dealt with our ablutions I popped over to the Post Shop to see if our mail had arrived. Nothing yet. Stayed at the Matamata Club with a couple of other Motorhomes and over to the bar for a drink and roast pork for dinner. Checked out the i-site centre to find out about the Hobbiton Tours and to the Post Shop to see if the mail had arrived. One package had but the rest was still to come. Walked around the shops then headed back, packed up and off to Hamilton to Claudelands to the Motor home show for the weekend.

Hamilton - I got us lost getting there, so many bridges and roundabouts in Hamilton and I had missed a roundabout when taking down the details from Goggle maps! Rang Deborah who sorted us out and we were back on track in no time and checked into the rally site next door to the motor home show running over the weekend. Once there Paul got all panicky about the air wedge that stops the slideout topper from flapping. The wind was quite strong and he couldn’t work it himself so starting getting impatient with me when he asked me to help! The lady in the next motor home caught my attention while Paul was around the other side she held up a sign saying “grumpy old fart inside” and asked if I wanted to borrow it! That just made me laugh and Paul yells out “what is so funny” I replied saying “ the lady next door has your number.”
Ray and Heather are from New Plymouth, a lovely couple, and she has an excellent sense of humour. The air wedge flew out and was heading for the hills, after all our, well mostly Paul’s effort to get it in! Gave up and put it away! After dinner we had coffee at Deborah and Steve’s place.

The motor home show started Friday morning and we caught up with Nick who had three units on display. There were plenty of motor homes to choose from and walk through, in all shapes and sizes. Back for lunch and Paul put the kettle on then realised we had run out of gas, which was my fault. I has said when we started into the 2nd gas bottle “don’t fill the first one now, the 2nd will last for ages, but about 17 days later we were totally out, so won’t be saying that again.
Had Lunch then out to get gas, back to base, set the gas bottle up and headed back to the show for another 4 hours. When we returned the place was warm! Paul had left the gas on all that time and the kettle had boiled dry and was "toast"! Just as well our home and our pussycat were okay! I did rant a bit to Paul! Yes really! We were very lucky! I keep saying after each incident “well he won’t do that again” when he does this stuff and he probably won’t but then he keeps finding new things to do! Enjoyed drinks and nibbles with Jocelyn and Fred’s that evening. I needed a drink!

From the show, we purchased things like oil, funnels, Eco Mist spray and chair supports for the truck. To town with Deborah playing navigator to get a new kettle! Groceries and back home,
then back into the show for a ZeroPak Vacuum Sealer. We decided this could be very useful for flat packing meat/ chicken etc for the freezer and keeps ham and fridge items fresh as you vacuum pack it and can reuse the bags you create. Came back and played with that for a while until Megan came round then out for Indian, which was lovely. The food was great and it was lovely to catch up again. The weekend had again disappeared and where the time went, I don’t know.
Ray and Heather came over to meet Muffin then the phone went and Roy and Marianne were in the car park looking for us. Put the kettle on again for another cuppa. Rose and Brian came back for a cuppa later in the day then we started to pack up around 3ish. By the time the goodbyes were done and we dumped, we left Hamilton about 5.30 and arrived in Matamata just before 7pm.
Paul headed to the bathroom and opened the cupboard; all I heard was an almighty crash.
He had fully opened the cupboard without a thought for the contents that may have moved in transit when my perfume bottle came flying out and smashed the vanity glass bowl into a million pieces. Far out!!! Our house moves, so EVERY cupboard must be opened slowly and with great caution and you need your hand well up into the cupboard as you open it.
His reply, “I thought you would have already been in the cupboards.”

Monday 5 March – Sunday 9 March
Matamata/ Tauranga

By the time I did the office work, found another vanity bowl online and got it couriered to Tauranga, we were not really in the mood, so flagged Hobbiton. Guess we will go another time!
Arrived at Wakerley’s in Tauranga just after 5pm. The next morning we backed inside the shed at Wakerleys, put Muffin in the wardrobe in her house and shut her in so she was safe and tried to do some work but the power had to be turned off while they did the welding so it became hopeless so sat outside and enjoyed the sun. Paul spent the day under the 5th Wheel in his overalls painting and sealing as the covers came off from underneath. At 4pm they told us we could not stay in the unit and we had to leave as they closed at 4.30! So we were very kindly housed for the next three nights at Cedric and Karyn’s place, Muffin too. You would think she owned their place, causal as and happy to wander the house and was just fine. She continues to amaze us with her laid back attitude and with all we throw at her. Thank you Kayrn and Cedric, you are both wonderful.
I took our dinner, breakfast and towels each night to save Karyn too many hassles.

The rest of the week consisted of emails to the USA chasing diagrams and missing hydraulic connections (again!) It did give Paul a chance to rust proof, seal and tidy wiring underneath.
The local hydraulic company was able to supply the parts we needed but after installing these parts the hydraulics would still not work, so emailed photos to Lippert in the USA to discover they had sent the wrong manifolds!! More waiting for the courier from USA!!
Enjoyed fish and chips down the Mount at the beach one night and the hot pools.
Paul worked on the bumper bar of the 5th Wheel that he ground back to cover with rust kill and repaint. We were moved outside into the daylight and onto jacks in the yard for the weekend and the slides came out. Yah. Sort of back to normal – have legs on but they just don’t work yet!
Washing and the housework in the weekend, then Bruce arrived with our Fly Buys package, an outdoor LED Latern. Cedric and Karyn popped over early afternoon after they had been to the gym and later in the afternoon Heather and Ray came by and invited us to the boat club with his son, wife and daughter, which was lovely. Sold our back legs to Brian and dropped the front legs to Nick to sell on our behalf and then drove to Omokoroa and checked out the seaside village, looked pretty nice even in the rain.

Monday 10 – Sunday 18 March - Tauranga
Not much happened this week, still here sorting the level up kit. It will be fantastic when it works!
While the underneath was all open and we waited for parts we decided to get new tank monitors for our fresh, grey and black tanks so they read correctly with actual percentage readings. The original ones were not great and were not accurate. This way we will know exactly how much fresh water we have left and how full our grey and black tanks are. We know the black tank takes about 2.5 weeks to fill, but the others empty and fill much more quickly! Installed a new water pump too, our one hammered and has no regulator to assist with flow in the kitchen and the shower if both are turned on at once. Both the new water pump and the new tank monitors played up not long after installation, we are having a run of it!! The water pump returned for replacement and there will discussions with the supplier of the tank monitor! By Friday the right manifolds arrived by international courier and were duly installed and believe it or not, the hydraulics system still doesn’t work! Called the USA many times but no reply!
Paul continued to do more painting underneath and I put the office away for the weekend!
Bruce arrived with our second Fly Buys package, a blood pressure monitor – we are getting old! Visited Paul’s sister, Michelle and Tom’s for a coffee and then to Chrissy and Paul’s where we ended up staying for dinner, a delicious dinner and a lovely evening. Thanks guys.
They have the most adorable little 3 month old Shiatsu called Griffin. He is Tan and Black and a complete little honey. Griffin befriended Paul and Paul thought he was totally adorable.
He is VERY cute, check him out!
Speaking of cute furry people, was talking with Leigh later in the week and she said Muffin should have her own photo page on the blog. We ladies love our four legged furry people. Muffin decided at 4am we needed waking so proceeded to scratch the lounge suite – a habit we have not managed to cure. After yelling at her she just came running up to bed purring and snuggled in with us. Naughty girl, but her purring gets us every time! Managed to get back to sleep but by 6.30am we were up and about.
I did the yoga class on TV and we were out walking by 7.45! Yes that is AM!
The weather was warm with no wind and we were wearing singlet tops and shorts. Nice, bring on Summer. An hour later we returned, did the dishes, thanked the club and headed to Hamilton, via Taumaranui with sun showers.

Met up with Veni and JP for lunch in Otorohanga, the weather was fabulous. We set up for lunch under the awning, deck chairs and tables. The council drove by about three times watching us as we were parked right next to the sign that said No Camping! We were just parked! We moved on and got to the Glenview Club in Hamilton around 4.30 where Scotty and Sandra were parked. Megan and her folks arrived around 5. A drink and a look around the 5th Wheel and Megan’s folks dropped us back to her place where we had a yummy Annabel Langbein chicken dish, followed by éclairs. Thanks Megan.

Up at 6.30am again, what is happening!
I don’t do mornings! Maybe I do with this lifestyle! Morning yoga and out for a ½ hour walk and down at RV Supplies by 9am to get more plumbing parts, almost there with the plumbing.Paul has been so busy doing a fabulous job on the plumbing work on the 5th Wheel. Some of it started to leak and he has completed his apprenticeship in plumbing for sure. The John Guest products he tells me are fantastic and easily to fix should any leaks occur in the future, but he is doing such a stirling job, there won’t be any. Packed up and headed off to Tauranga in teaming rain. Arrived at the race course where Richard from Canvas Worx altered our windbreak porch area and 5th wheel skirt. The weather was hot and sunny, then the next minute a downpour – very tropical. By 5pm we were off to Pyes Pa Pop, got set up and at happy hour with about 8 other motorhomers. Eric and Jacqui with their two cats were in residence there, was great to see them again. Dinner around 8, another BBQ.

6.30 start again with a walk at 7am with Maree then back for yoga and then into the housework and washing. Had been so long we had forgotten how to use the washing machine, the pipe work part, so Clinton from Wakerleys popped up to see us which was wonderful and had us sorted in no time. Headed out after lunch to get some groceries and some items from Mega for the 5th Wheel, then out to see Nick and Karen and the many 5th Wheels at their property waiting to be completed to go to their new owners. We enjoyed dinner with Chrissy and Paul and their daughters, Alice and Becky. Paul bought home some lovely fresh fish and the salad was delicious. Thank you again for a lovely evening.

Thursday morning, yoga, out for a walk and back to pack up. Finally left for Waihi Beach about 11ish! You end up chatting to everyone when you are trying to leave, but it is lovely to meet new people and learn more. Refuelled at KatiKati and arrived at Waihi Beach 12.30. Registered and booked in. Wendy had gone to the trouble of making everyone a cute little birthday hat with some goodies inside. 24 vehicles by Thursday evening with Happy Hour at 4pm followed by a BBQ dinner.

Friday started with yoga, then a walk with many keen rally goers. Back to camp then headed out for a 16km bike ride at 10am with three classes of 10 & 11 year olds from the local school kids, to Bowentown. (The bottom knew all about it a few days later!) Managed to lose Paul! He thought I was still riding to catch the group even though I was in the group he was talking too, so he biked back to find me. In the meantime I didn’t see him go and we all proceeded over the hill to Anzac Bay, which is stunning. Chatted to one of the parents, Steve, who works at the Waihi Gold Mine. Steve works around 5 months of the year overall and is able to enjoy spending time with his daughter for her school events. A little while later I started to panic, Paul was not answering the phone, so Graeme kindly drove me around in his truck looking for Paul. Paul finally called to say he was back at base! He had tried to come back to find us but had no idea where we had gone! At least everyone was found and safe! We left the kids to swim and have lunch and rode back to Bowentown for a coffee. Lunch around 2pm then into Waihi Beach shops for some supplies about 3pm. Wandered around the 15 or so shops, then back for Happy Hour. Lovely spot is Waihi Beach and the weather was perfect. Our 5th Wheel Birthday party was Friday night, so the club put on sausages and desert with everyone bringing a dish to make up our dinner party. Many made the effort to dress up like a 5 year old for our party as that was the theme. We had some very cute 5 year olds with Scotty winning the boys and Wendy, the girls, who made her costume. We had a birthday cake that was iced by Lizzy, Graeme and Kathy’s daughter who is a school teacher at Waihi Beach School, hence we knew about the bike ride. She did a brilliant job with our 5th Wheel Logo on the cake and around the cake named many of our rally locations. We then learnt the 5th Wheel Shuffle Song that Vic had written.Vic entertained us with his music and dedicated a song to me. He calls me Butterfly. He sang the song “Love is like a butterfly”.Thank you Vic, you are just lovely. Home around 10pm and into bed before midnight.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; The day just vanished with people in and out checking out what we have done and heaps of talking. Lunch around 3, Happy Hour at 4, then dressed for dinner and over to Veni & JP’s for a quick drink with Grant & Rae and Dave & Jan. As the weather was not great, we decided to take the truck, so all 8 of us squeezed in and up the hill to the RSA we went. Dinner was lovely, a good meal, the music was not, no dancing, which was a bit of a shame.
We were invited over to Jan and Dave’s but decided we would blob out and watch some TV.

Sunday mornings walk started at the later time of 8.30 and I did struggle to get out of bed but it was worth it. After the walk, Faye and I were walking over to the local Sunday markets when an elderly local lady stopped and offered us a ride, how lovely was that. We took her up on her offer. Purchased some sour dough bread for lunch, strawberries, nuts and some ache balm. Morning tea at 10.30 then many left the rally, although we still had a great turn out for drinks later in the day, around 15-20 vehicles still on site. Vic, Scotty and Doug got out their guitars and we had a sing song while Roy and Graeme were underway with the BBQ for a communal dinner and left over ice cream and fruit salad. We went visiting after dinner to Peter and Faye’s bus which is lovely and caught up with Fred, Leigh and Joshua who bought Chrissy and Paul’s Wildcat. By 9.45 we were almost alseep, so headed home to bed.

At the Otaki rally Paul has bought a Shuzi wrist band. He has been able to enjoy the morning walks free from pain which has been great. The arthritis in his knees seems to be so much better.

Monday more goodbyes, then coffee and our anniversary cake with Wendy and Vic who were celebrating their 42nd Wedding Anniversary. We left and headed south around noon and arrived at Sulphur Point in Tauranga to stay the night. Scotty and Sandra were already there.Lunch and out for some groceries where we met Grant and Rae in the carpark, chatted for a while then visited Paul’s Dad, Brian and Chanthra. Skyped Sam after dinner and in bed by 10.30. I managed to sleep but Paul did not as the trains shunted backwards and forwards all night! Lovely spot during the day but the port continues through the night. We were warned, won’t stay there again!

Slow start Monday with Yoga around 9 and breakfast at 10! Wet again. Did some office work. Had lunch around 2.30, BBQ outside, warm but misty rain. Nick came by with a new 5th Wheel he was running the brakes in on, a huge 5th Wheel that requires a 3rd axle. He dropped off some overlay wood grain covering for our unit. About 4pm we started thinking about leaving and packed up, said goodbye to Scotty and Sandra and headed off. As we pulled out Chrissy and Paul had just finished work, stopped for a quick chat with them and arrived in Taupo at the new NZMCA site at the airport around 7.30. Set up and rang Mignon and chatted as we prepared our BBQ dinner. Muffin was more than happy to wander about outside without her lead on as Paul cooked dinner. We did put her on the long lead just in case she got spooked by something but I guess with only two other vehicles around, she was quite happy as it is a very peaceful and quiet spot.

Left Paul sleeping as I rose to do Yoga. Did some office work and we left for Takapau around 2pm. We got as far as Napier and decided to stay there. We called Ian and Eleanor to catch up with them. They suggested we stay at the Bay View Van Park that they had previously owned. Pulled in there, plenty of room for big rigs with well laid out clean camping grounds. Powered up, set up and paid our $20 for the night, if NZMCA, $30 usually. We took our wine and nibbles to Ian and Eleanor’s and enjoyed their company for a few hours. Paul cooked our lamb chops on the BBQ while Muffin wandered about on her 5m lead, she even took care of her ablutions outside. She is adapting very well to our new lifestyle. She is out of the wardrobe more often and finding new places to sleep. The Bay View Van Park is on the main road, trucks passing through all night, note to self “park further back from the road next time” Muffin took the noise all in her stride as she wandered about, having lived her entire life on a main road. By 10.30 Paul was nodding off so off to bed. No Yoga Thursday morning, shoulder hurting a bit from yesterday’s yoga. Washing and housework took care of the morning, followed by coffee and shortbread with Ian and Eleanor. They are well travelled and we learnt of their latest trip to the US, through Indianna and even visited the RV Hall of Fame and were very amused by the Amish people who still ride around in horse and carts. Ian taught me a few tricks from his Senior Net classes about formatting in word and columns. We are looking forward to receiving their newsletters on their travels. Left Napier 1.30pm, destination Takapau, with a stop at Waipawa to refuel and a visit to New World.

As we travel the roads, it is amazing how much moves about in the cupboards and drawers and once set up, opening the fridge is with great care! Yet I forgot to put a tumbler of water with coriander in it in the sink and on arrival the tumbler was only 20 cms from where it was placed and not a drop spilt! Paul said it must be his good driving!

Arrived in Takapau and set up camp and over to Richard and Jackie’s for drinks. Great to see them again. The Vines in Takapau where Richard and Jackie are selling sections are for motorhomers. It is looking great and coming together nicely with a few more sections sold. The grape vines are now along the fence lines and even a few grapes can be seen on the established vines.Dinner inside as raining, then Richard and Jackie came over for supper.
A fabulous night’s sleep as very peaceful here, in fact we were not awake until 8, except Paul had been up taking Muffin for a wander at 5am! Her way of telling us what she wants, appears to be scratching the lounge suites! A meow would do, but when she cries in the truck, we ignore her, so guess her way ensures she gets our attention, good or bad!

We have been measuring the amount of water consumption we use for showers and Paul is around 4 litres and I am around 6 except for hair washing and shaving days which is around 10 litres. So we figure around 60 litres a day is our consumption for dishes, showers, toilet etc. We figure that is not too bad as we have 280 on board, so around 5 days before needing to fill up, plus of course the 145 on the back of the truck.

Nice weather today, good to see some sun and dry our towels, but with the new heated towel rail in the bathroom, it is not really a problem, but we might as well make use of the weather. Leisurely morning with the final two pieces of our Wedding Anniversary cake consumed for morning tea. Thanks Sue, we love our anniversary cakes each year.

We left just after lunch and headed for the Carterton Golf Club. Dean has said it was fine for us to park there for the night. Carterton Golf Club Chester Road off SH2 are happy to have NZMCA members who are self contained stay for free. There is water onsite and power if you need it. Very peaceful and plenty of space.

We arrived at the Golf club around 5, set up and called Dean and Dianne who came over with their boys, Brayden and Simon. We went back to their place for a BBQ and had a lovely night catching up. Thanks guys. They gave us one of their cars to drive back and the Golf Club was pitch black. Note to self, carry a torch!

Saturday we were in no hurry to get up or get going, so took our time. Dean and Di came round for coffee and collected their car. We headed away before lunch, stopping for a bite to eat in Featherston.

Fabulous trip, it was great to catch up with so many friends again.

Christmas Week
I was in class all week getting my HT Class 2 licence.
Richard Wright from Drivewright runs the course. A lovely man who is calm and patient, with his classroom overlooking Lyall Bay beach with stunning views. It is amazing how much you do not see on the road as a car driver, signs are deliberately placed to signal to truck drivers to change down as the corner approaches. In an automatic you don’t even think about that! You learn to shuffle the steering wheel, rather than turning your arms with the wheel. This is much easier, even in the car. I now appreciate the level of skill Paul has and how managing fatigue is extremely important. The level of concentration required is huge and I am only in the truck, let alone having the 5th Wheel attached. I will tackle our truck for now and consider the 5th Wheel later!

Leading up to Christmas and through January, our furniture is up for sale, the house on the rental market and boxes being packed for storage. Soon we head off on our big adventure.
We have had our 5th Wheel for 1 ½ years and it has taken that time to get it the way we want it.

Full steam ahead now, catch you later.

<a href='http://changingplaces.weebly.com/uploads/5/7/3/1/5731163/8534469_orig.jpg' rel='lightbox[gallery933050793672331454]' onclick='if (!window.lightboxLoaded) return false' title='Otorohanga - "> Arrived at Lindsay’s in Otaki mid morning on Friday so he could install the mud flaps on the 5th Wheel, then headed north stopping at the Sheepskin factory on the Himatangi straights to check out sheepskin covers for the truck. I walked in first to see if we could fit and thought we could, so I waved Paul in and clearly we are bigger than I realise, so turning around was mission impossible, which meant Paul had to back out onto SH1! I suggested I just stop the traffic with my fluro
“Fulton Hogan” type jacket on, but he pointed out I would probably be killed trying to do that on SH1 and the trucks were motoring along rather fast! He did manage to back out and hug the curb and all was well, be it he was a little stressed. I pointed out I am helping him enhance his driving skills with all these challenges! We ordered beautiful grey, called Dover covers for the front seats in merino wool to collect on our return. We arrived in Waiouru around 5pm and settled in for the night behind the museum with security on guard, nice to know they are about, especially being the only vehicle there. Muffin had a good wander around checking out some lovely smelling shrubs in the cold dark night, not by herself of course, harnessed and on the lead.

Saturday, through to Tauranga and stayed a couple of nights at the Tauranga Tourist Park and enjoyed a bbq with Scotty and Sandra and met Ken & Dee and Owen & Rose, all who are travelling around in their 5th Wheels. Sunday, Brian (Pauls’ Dad) and Chanthra came for coffee and then late afternoon Chrissy and Paul collected us, as we could not unhitch. We headed back to their place for a very yummy Turkish dinner and desert. Thanks Guys.

Monday we arrived at Wakerley’s to have the washing machine installed. We tested it overnight as we stayed in their yard and everything worked well. Wakerley’s re tensioned the slide topper for us (an awning like cover) that comes in and out with the slides to keep rain and leaves from the slide tops. While checking that out Paul noticed a number of rusty screws so he replaced all of the screws with stainless ones. Graeme, our dealer Nick’s father in law came over to Wakerley’s to collect our broken leg and returned it after his engineer fixed it. Just as well it was fixed, as arriving at Bill’s Bus Stop; Bill wanted the 5th Wheel unhitched from the truck so he could install the 2 new solar panels and the new regulator. So we called Scotty and asked for his help and he was there in a flash and helped Paul install the fixed leg so Bill could start the work. Thanks Scotty.
Lynnette stopped in for an hour, before picking up her boys from school, so we chatted while having a very late lunch. We stayed overnight in Bill’s yard so he could complete some other work for us in the morning. We called Richard from Canvas Worx and had him pop round and measure up for a skirt for the 5th wheel and a porch arrangement, great for wind protection while sitting outside. That afternoon we called to get the quote, accepted it and were to come back to Monday / Tuesday next week to have it installed. All good until he said they were out of stock of the material and the domes so it will be made and couriered to us instead. We enjoyed lunch with Kath in town and mid afternoon we were on our way to the Whakatane Golf Club to meet up with Tony and Sandra from Wellington who had travelled up for the Kawerau rally also. Nice spot, plenty of room and $10 for the night on power. Reece and Stephanie and their adorable wee daughter Grace in her pretty pink dress came round after dinner to visit. Was great to see them again, has been a few years since we last caught up, so be it a brief visit, it was lovely.

Thursday morning we disconnect from shore power and check to see how our new panels are pulling in the solar. We discover that we have no power at all so check the monitors and they read 17.8 volts. Call Bill and he says the monitor should not read any more than 15 volts and to check the regulator so Paul pops in underneath and hears the batteries bubbling. Bill says turn everything off and come back Monday, he thinks it is a faulty regulator, then informs us we will need to rely on the generator for the weekend in Kawerau at the rally to charge the batteries, no solar power for now. We of course were not happy as we now had to return to Tauranga from Kawerau and of course could not test the solar out and we were very worried about our four batteries bubbling.

We left for Kawerau concerned and frustrated and arrived to set up. Half an hour of mucking about trying to get level, which amuses those around us as we like to be perfectly level, as there is nothing worse than having your head lower than your feet, Paul dropped the front legs, moved the truck forward AND the 5th Wheel slipped from the plastic level stands (never to be used again) and the pin on the 5th Wheel nose dived into the back of the truck knocking the connection plugs and breaking them and denting the metal cover on the water tank on the back of the truck. You can imagine Paul’s horror. He had not chocked the wheels, before he released it from the truck and the unit slipped off the plastic level stands which were wet and do not bind.
NO more plastic, wood ONLY BUT always CHOCK the wheels first. Not sure how the water tank is, as after arriving home there was no water in it at all and it did have 145 litres in it! Will have to remove the cover, panel beat it, fix the plugs and check the seams on the water tank! Ummmmmmmmmm. We finally unhitched and were stable at which time Paul needed a breather and some time out, so he went for a drive to Mitre 10 to buy pegs for the new outdoor mat that had come in from the US and had been delivered to us at the rally.

There were about 10 early rally attendees on Thursday so we enjoyed Happy Hour together outside Graeme and Kathy’s unit and then I took Muffin over to visit Wendy and Vic and she wandered around their unit and checked out what Wendy was doing. Wendy kindly invited us for dinner and what a very welcome offer that was, given the day we had had.
Roast chicken and all the trimmings and desert. Yum Yum Yum, thank you Wendy & Vic.
We enjoyed listening to a new song Vic had recorded about being “Proud to be a Kiwi”.
We all agreed it would make a great song for the World Cup being held Sept/Oct this year.

The rally was a great success with a record number of new people attending. Fred & Jocelyn hosted a great rally and we all enjoyed meeting the new people and the regulars who attended. We met two lovely couples from Pukekohe, Jan & Dave and JP and Veni, both with new Rockwood’s that are lovely units. They had some great ideas they have used in their units which no doubt we will use too. The great part about rallies is there are always new friends to meet and ideas to be gathered.
The weather was mostly good apart from a very cold Saturday morning around -3!
Tony and Sandra led an 8.30 morning walk each day and they were great, walking through lovely parks and chatting with new people each day and enjoying Kawerau.
Friday at morning tea outside our unit the boys all got together to read the regulator manual and check the settings, which it turned out had been set for 24 volts not 12 volts. Thanks Roy and Vic.
Once reset the entire solar system worked well throughout the weekend but we still worried about the possible damage to our batteries trying to reach 24 volts when only capable of 12!
We enjoyed a combined bbq and quiz on Friday night before a dip in the hot pools which had us all sleep very well.

During the rally Paul wanted to try out the washing machine. I was on the phone when he pops in to ask me where the Laundry Balls are? These are natural washing balls that are used in place of washing liquid and work wonderfully.
I collect these and pop outside to an audience of many all interested in the new machine. I look down and spy the laundry basket outside and washing in the machine all ready to go. I ask Paul without trying to make a fuss, where all my Lingerie is?
Not quite prepared to get that up close and personal with the audience! Thankfully he had left all "my" stuff in the basket!
Quite funny, but not at the time!

We had afternoon outdoor games and a Pot Luck dinner on Saturday followed by many watching the rugby while others went to the pool. Sunday afternoon about 24 of us headed to the Tarawera Falls which were brilliant. The weather was not great and rained most of the time, but we walked in the 20 minutes to see the falls and they were impressive. It was quite a drive inland on very bumpy unsealed pumice roads, the truck was filthy, never before had it been so dirty! Back to camp and a number of people said goodbye and those that stayed enjoyed a bbq together around the pool and then a lovely soak before bed.

Monday it was good bye to all and we headed back to Tauranga via Whakatane where we got a valuation done on the 5th Wheel by Coastal Caravans. Back at Bills Bus Stop around 3pm and he apologised and checked out the batteries and the regulator and fortunately for him there was no damage to our batteries which he was pleased about. He did say if he had to replace them then he would, which was nice to know. Back to the Tauranga Tourist Park and later that night we popped round to Cedric and Karen’s for coffee.

Tuesday we did our washing, all very exciting with the new machine and then headed into town with Brian (Paul’s Dad) in the afternoon, followed by Bingo in the lounge at the Tourist Park in the evening. Wednesday we had a relaxing day, lunch in town then wandered around Bethlehem shops and posted Sam’s (my girlfriend) birthday present to her in Auckland.

Thursday morning woke to rain that had poured throughout the night. It was quite damp under foot for Paul to do the pack up outside. I dragged Muffin literally out of the wardrobe into the truck, she was not happy to leave her home to bounce around in the truck again, but we prefer she is with us so we know how she is, even if not happy! She does settle eventually. We headed off around lunch time and got to Turangi around 4pm and stayed at POP 803 with Darrell & Jose, where there is plenty of space, $5 per night. The Tongariro River Estate Vineyard and Restaurant was just across the lane, so we had to go for dinner, which was delightful. We shared Duck Pate on homemade Brioche bread. Paul had the Venison Hot Pot and I had Herbed Chicken with Humus and Mint Yoghurt on Rocket complimented by a Tongariro River Estate Pinot Noir. Nice.
Darrell, a builder has built the most amazing “man shed” which is huge with room for the mezzanine floor as well as a 5th Wheel. Darrell has his caravan in the shed, but there would be room for 6 or so more caravans and about 4 caravans high!!
Chickens roam free in the fenced area next door with their own double glazed aluminium windowed, fully insulated shed with push button self feeders and a continuous water fountain. These are the most well fed, happy chickens ever!

Friday morning we left Turangi about 11am and headed south. We went via Palmerston North to The Saddlery Warehouse get some wet weather pants and Mucker Boots we had learnt about from Veni and Jan in Kawerau, to save us getting soaked next time we walk in the rain. Then onto the Sheepskin factory to have the seat covers installed, they are lovely and lush, will make our travels even more enjoyable. Headed through to the Foxton Boat Ramp where we enjoyed Friday night Fish and Chips at the boat clubhouse with the locals in the club. They figured it was us parked outside so a few came over to chat. Nice quiet night and fabulous views over the water.

A fabulous 2 week holiday and we arrived home safe and sound in time for the snow and storms to hit the country on Sunday through to Thursday the following week. A very pretty and unusual sight to see snow in Wellington!
We have since checked the water tank and it appears okay and we can replace the broken plugs and have rubber hammered out the dent! We were told this would be challenging, and it is, but we are still loving it, one year on.

The captions appear when The six of us got together again for supper at our place. Muffin came out to greet everyone and happily lounged around. She was not interested in venturing out either night.

Saturday the weather was cold and wet mostly but it did break long enough for us to walk to Gleeson’s Tractor Museum called the “The Tin Hut” where the vehicles were really well restored and there were plenty of them in the many sheds around the property. Headed back past the Tui Brewery and popped into the shop to check it out and lost Paul is the process.
Wandered back and he was there wondering where I got to! Hot soup and toast for lunch and later Clive came over to say they were heading to the pub for afternoon drinks, sounds like a plan. Headed over and enjoyed the fire before heading back for Happy Hour at Clive and Christine’s then home for dinner. We were going to meet up again after dinner but the heavens opened and the hail came with the thunder and lighting. Everyone sent texts to say they were going nowhere tonight!
The unit rocked and rolled a bit through the night so we slept with the slides pulled in.
A good test, I guess, to see if we had any leaks and to test drive the unit in very strong wind.

Sunday we headed north to Takapau to catch up with Richard and Jackie and check out their sections for sale at “The Vines”. They are looking great, already fenced and soon the vines will be in, making the 20 sections more visually appealing.
We backed in as it was too difficult to drive in and Paul was making good progress getting her into position down the driveway and on the gravel but turning the truck too far we got stuck in the grass and the more you try to get it the deeper you get!
There we stayed, hitched to the truck, sort it out tomorrow. The weather was cold and sometimes wet but nowhere near as windy as the last night. Enjoyed drinks and nibbles from 6 -9 and it was great to catch up again. After Richard and Jackie left, we had dinner - toast and a cuppa!

We headed home the next day and dumped in Dannevirke which is not a bad dump station, plenty of room to get in.
A late lunch at the Gorge carpark around 2pm, then stopped in at Lindsay’s (our truck engineer) in Otaki to ask about mud flaps for the unit, to save it getting so dirty. He is getting this sorted for us for next time we head north.

Arrived back around 6pm, parked up and decided to unhitch in the morning. The next morning tried to unhitch to discover that the leg would not come down. The very same leg that we had problems with the week we collected the unit last July and then it played up again in Hastings in January. This time is was history. Contacted Nick and he sent another leg from one of the units in his yard, but it was the wrong size. With the help of Tony the unit is unhitched on bottle jacks on the drive but this is not ideal.
Emailed the factory to get another leg but it wouldn’t be here in time before we go away again and the airfreight was $1200!
Nick, now in the US found a new leg that he will ship next month in another unit. In the meantime we need to remain hitched while away. A tad annoying given the unit is near new and was faulty from the start.
Hopefully the new leg will be a good one this time.
We do however, now have diesel heating. Paul and Bill installed the diesel heating system in the unit a few weeks ago and it is brilliant, quiet and economical, just fabulous. Lovely and warm, with the vent in the bathroom, warming up one’s rear nicely! Friday night we stayed in after dinner.

Saturday, we woke to a very chilly morning, the sun came out but we were shadowed by the trees all day. We have since bought a compass so we will know exactly where to park in the future, especially as Paul likes to get as much solar power as possible. Instead of the usual BBQ lunch at the rally, we headed to Bill’s 70th birthday lunch. We enjoyed catching up with the members of the BMW club that we were once part of, as many attended the party. A lovely afternnon and then back to the rally for the Pot Luck dinner about 6pm. I am still learning how to successfully use the gas oven so the dish I was taking took an age and was not cooked in time, so we just headed over for dessert that was put on by the club. A movie was played that evening in the hall but we decided it wasn’t one for us and headed back to base.

Sunday cold and sunny but we wandered about and chatted to a couple of members who had installed diesel heating.
Had some lunch and headed home.
